Russia Returns 95 Soldiers From Ukrainian Captivity

Russia has negotiated the release of 95 of its soldiers taken prisoner in Ukraine-controlled territories, who have already returned home, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

"On July 17, 2024, as a result of the negotiation process, 95 Russian servicepeople who were in mortal danger in captivity were returned from the territory controlled by the Kiev regime. In return, 95 prisoners of war of the Ukrainian armed forces were transferred in return," the statement said.

All the released servicemen will be transported by military transport aircraft to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation in medical institutions of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the statement said.

  1. Russia and Ukraine have released a total of 190 captured soldiers in the latest prisoner exchange between the two sides, officials in Moscow and Kyiv announced Wednesday.

Thousands of POWs have been freed in more than 50 individual exchanges throughout the war - an area where the two sides have been able to strike rare agreements since Russia invaded in February 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s defense ministry each said Wednesday that 95 of their soldiers had been freed.

  4. Moscow has exchanged 95 Ukrainian prisoners of war for an equal number of Russian POWs, the Defense Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

The troops have been airlifted to Moscow for medical treatment and rehabilitation, the statement said.

The ministry stated that the lives of the Russian soldiers in Ukrainian custody were under threat and expressed appreciation to the United Arab Emirates, which mediated the swap.

The military also released footage showing the returning Russian soldiers.

The imminent prisoner exchange was reported earlier in the day by Bloomberg. The news agency’s source claimed that 90 people would be released by each side.

Around 1,400 POWs have been freed by Russia and Ukraine over a total of six UAE-facilitated swaps this year, according to Bloomberg’s count.

The regular exchanges were disrupted in January, when a Russian transport plane carrying Ukrainian POWs was shot down over Belgorod Region. Moscow accused Ukraine of firing two Patriot missiles at the aircraft, killing everyone aboard the Ilyushin Il-76, including 65 Ukrainian troops, three Russian guards, and six crew members.

In early June, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that his nation was holding 6,465 Ukrainian POWs, while 1,348 Russians were in Kiev’s custody.
