Israeli Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar, who led the delegation, said Israel will not have strategic depth if it withdraws from the Jordan Valley and the Israel Defense Forces should maintain its presence in the area "for all eternity," Israel Radio reported.
"We are here in the Jordan valley out of recognition that during these days, one of the most crucial issues to Israel's future is at stake," Sa'ar said.
There are 21 Jewish settlements and reported near 7,000 Jews in the Jordan Valley annexed by Israel amid the 1967 Mideast War.
The status of the Jordan Valley, which is located in the eastern West Bank, is one of the main issues amid the current Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demands that Israel would deploy security forces in the valley, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas considers such a move as a violation of the Palestinian sovereignty.
The visit came several hours before Kerry's expected visit in Israel for another attempt to get the faltered peace talks back on the track after reported deterioration of the talks and try to create a framework to reach an interim agreement between both parties the peace talks expire in April.

ReplyDeleteLe secrétaire d'Etat américain John Kerry a rencontré jeudi à Jérusalem le Premier ministre israélien, au début de sa 10e mission, destinée à faire avancer les négociations de paix, malgré le pessimisme ambiant et les récriminations réciproques.
Sitôt arrivé à Jérusalem, il s'est entretenu pendant cinq heures avec Benjamin Netanyahu.
M. Kerry devait revoir M. Netanyahu vendredi matin avant d'être reçu dans la soirée à Ramallah (Cisjordanie) par le président palestinien, Mahmoud Abbas.
Le chef de la diplomatie américaine est arrivé au moment où l'ex-Premier ministre Ariel Sharon, dans le coma depuis huit ans, se trouve dans un état jugé "critique" par les médecins.
Il assuré ses hôtes que "tous les Américains ont une pensée pour Israël et son ancien dirigeant".
Au cours de sa mission de quatre jours, le secrétaire d'Etat entend discuter avec Israéliens et Palestiniens d'un projet d'"accord-cadre" américain traçant les grandes lignes d'un règlement définitif.
"J'ai l'intention de travailler avec les deux parties plus intensément dans les prochains jours pour aplanir les divergences sur un cadre qui offrirait les lignes directrices agréées pour les négociations sur le statut final", a expliqué M. Kerry à son arrivée.
"Un accord-cadre accepté (par les deux camps) serait une percée significative qui permettrait de couvrir tous les problèmes de fond", comme les frontières, la sécurité, le statut de Jérusalem et les réfugiés, a-t-il fait valoir.

Aucun détail n'a filtré sur le contenu des discussions, qui se sont déroulées dans l'hôtel de Jérusalem Ouest où séjourne M. Kerry, en présence d'une dizaine de responsables israéliens et américains.
Avant sa rencontre jeudi avec le Premier ministre israélien Benjamin Netanyahu, M. Kerry avait dit entendre discuter avec Israéliens et Palestiniens d'un projet d'"accord-cadre" américain traçant les grandes lignes d'un règlement définitif.

ReplyDeleteU.S. Secretary of State makes surprise appearance before American students in Jerusalem, says he believes progress can be made in peace talks.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday he believes progress can be made in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
Kerry, who had met earlier with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told American students at the David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem that he remained hopeful. "I am a believer in the possibility… we could achieve something," he said, "but it will be very, very difficult."
Kerry made a surprise appearance at a briefing by State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki to students from an American Jewish Committee delegation.
Some of the students present reported what Kerry has said in their Twitter accounts and even posted photographs. One of the students said that Kerry explained he was "wading through a volatile cocktail of issues." Kerry reportedly added that "the U.S. is working with a lot of good will, and 'both leaders recognize the consequences of failure."
Kerry is scheduled to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday evening. Even as he made his way to Ramallah, however, Palestinians were protesting on the streets of the city, chanting "Go home." One Palestinian official described the framework agreement that Kerry is trying to broker as 'a worthless piece of paper."
Meanwhile, U.S. Republican Senator John McCain, who is also in Israel and has conferred with the Israeli Prime minister, told a news conference on Friday that Netanyahu doubted the proposals.
"Netanyahu has serious, serious concerns about the plan as it has been presented to him, whether it be on the ability of Israel to defend its borders, on the reliability of a Palestinian state ... and particularly on the overall security," he said.
"We also are very concerned," he said, standing alongside fellow Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
