Earlier, the US State Department announced Washington's plans to begin a dialogue with the Niger authorities on the withdrawal of troops from this country.
It was reported that this was the result of ongoing discussions between the United States and the new Niger authorities since 2023 about continued security cooperation.
Soon after this, the Pentagon announced that part of the American contingent would be withdrawn from Chad.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Friday there was no significant issue with US forces in Niger, after Reuters reported Russian military personnel had entered an air base in the capital Niamey that is hosting US troops.
“The Russians are in a separate compound and don't have access to US forces or access to our equipment,” Austin told a news conference in Honolulu.
