Moscow: US Claims of Russia Refusing to Probe Syrian Chemical Attacks 'Slander'

Syria gas attacks probe to be revived
Moscow has emphasized that Russia insists on full, inclusive probe into chemical attacks, not only in Syria.

Russia categorically rejects the position of the US as Washington is complicating the investigation of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"You know that our positions diametrically diverge here. We do not agree with the US position," Peskov added and warned against "labelling without any basis."

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has also commented on the issue, saying that considers Washington's statements on East Ghouta chemical attack too far-reaching, hopes US partners to 'cool down'.

He added that the US groundless statements on latest chemical attack in Syria is a provocation ahead of Syrian National Dialogue Congress.

  1. The latest spat between Washington and Moscow over how reports of chemical weapon attacks in Syria should be investigated seems to be just an episode in which US political necessities trump transparency in policy-making...

On Monday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson blamed Russia for a suspected chlorine gas attack in a Damascus neighborhood. The incident was reported by anti-Damascus groups, which said the Syrian Army had attacked civilians. Tillerson used the reports to showcase Russia’s supposed bad behavior in Syria, and said “whoever conducted the attacks, Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the victims.”

The word “whoever” stands for “whichever actors in league with the President Bashar Assad regime,” since, according to Washington’s apparent reasoning, the only plausible scenario is that bad regime guys attacked innocent civilians, because why not? Alternatives, ranging from false flag operation to accidental release of the gas, which is not a chemical weapon in itself and is used in many civilian applications, were absent from Tillerson’s rhetorical exercise. This was not surprising, considering that he was speaking at an event dedicated to circumventing Russia’s veto at the UN Security Council in assigning blame for chemical attacks in Syria on Damascus.

Tillerson’s message was quite clear: since Moscow supports Damascus, whatever happens in the territory that the Syrian government claims to control is Moscow’s fault......https://on.rt.com/8xn9

  2. Russian Foreign Ministry has lashed out over US accusations of Russia and Syria of using chemical weapons as “lies” and aim at obstructing any effort toward finding a way out of the crisis in Syria.

The Ministry, in a statement on Wednesday, said that Washington is trying to derail the objective investigation into the chemical attacks as it is not interested in identifying those who are truly responsible for the attacks.

The statement stressed that the US had run a wide-scale propaganda war against Russia, rejecting Moscow or the Syrian Army’s responsibility for carrying out the alleged chemical attack in Ghouta.

The statement said that a number of US high ranking officials on January 23rd, directed false charges to Russia and Syria in an attempt to blame Moscow and Damascus for the use of chemical weapons. It added that a huge propaganda campaign is being launched with the aim of defaming Russia on the international arena and undermining the efforts exerted to reach a peaceful settlement to the crisis in Syria.
