The South Korean military says that North Korea has fired several missiles into the sea of Japan (East sea).
It said that the projectiles were launched from a missile base near the border with China and had flown about 1,000 kilometres.
The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, said 4 ballistic missiles had been launched, three of them landing in waters in Tokyo's exclusive economic zone.
Mr Abe said this clearly demonstrated a new threat from North Korea.
"We should quickly finish the deployment of THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) deployment and acquire a defence system against North Korea's nuclear missiles," said Hwang in opening remarks while presiding over a National Security Council meeting after the North's latest provocation.
The Missile launch is seen as an apparent retaliation over recent U.S.-South Korean military drills.
