On eve of meeting with Kerry, Netanyahu says efforts to impose solution on Israel will fail

Attempts to get the UN Security Council to force Israel to withdraw to the 1967 lines within two years will fail, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting.

Netanyahu’s comments came a day before he is scheduled to fly to Rome to meet US Secretary of State John Kerry and discuss both the resolution the Palestinians plan on taking to the UN Security Council in the near future calling for a full Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 lines in two years, as well as a more moderate French proposal being drawn up together with the Germans and the British.

  • Kerry is scheduled to meet shortly after his arrival in Rome Sunday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Rome to discuss the various proposals. Following his meeting with Netanyahu, Kerry is scheduled to fly to London where he will meet on the proposals both with a Palestinian delegation, and a delegation of foreign ministers from the Arab League.

Netanyahu, who will also meet during his one-day trip to Rome with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, said he will tell both Kerry and Renzi that Israel “stands as a solitary island against the waves of Islamic extremism that are washing over the entire Middle East. Until now we have successfully withstood and repelled these attacks and now we also stand against the possibility of a diplomatic assault, i.e. an attempt to compel us – by means of UN decisions – to withdraw to the 1967 lines within two years.”

  • Such a development, he said, would lead to bringing “Islamic extremists to the suburbs of Tel Aviv and to the heart of Jerusalem. We will not allow this. We will strongly and responsibly rebuff this. Let there be no doubt, this will be rejected.”

  1. Israel PM rejects withdrawal talk ahead of Kerry meet ...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Dec. 14 rejected talk of Israel withdrawing from east Jerusalem and the West Bank within two years, on the eve of a meeting with the top US diplomat.

"We... stand against the possibility of a diplomatic assault, that is an attempt to compel us by means of UN decisions to withdraw to the 1967 lines within two years," said Netanyahu.

The Jewish state seized east Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank during the 1967 Six-Day War. It pulled out of Gaza in 2005.

Netanyahu said such a withdrawal now would bring "Islamic extremists to the suburbs of Tel Aviv and to the heart of Jerusalem."

Speaking ahead of the weekly meeting of his cabinet, he said he would raise the issue in Rome with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Monday.

"I will tell them that Israel, to a large degree, stands as a solitary island against the waves of Islamic extremism that are washing over the entire Middle East," the Israeli premier said........................http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/israel-pm-rejects-withdrawal-talk-ahead-of-kerry-meet.aspx?pageID=238&nID=75626&NewsCatID=352

  2. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that “Israel will stand firm against any efforts to dictate terms and will repulse all attempts to bring terrorism into our homes.”...

The premier made the remarks upon boarding his plane bound for Rome, where he will meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss Palestinian efforts to convince the United Nations to force an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank.

“Time after time, we have repulsed attempts to dictate terms that would hurt Israel's security and were not compatible with real peace,” Netanyahu said.

The premier said that Israel would not accept "unilateral acts that are time-dependent."

Netanyahu said this is “especially true at a time when Islamic terrorism was reaching all corners of the globe.”
